Regional Seminars Big Success

CFI/BACI recently conducted seminars about SB371 in Burbank (Region 1), San Francisco (Region 2), Fresno (Region 3), and San Diego and Riverside (Region 4). The seminars were given by Mary Lou Aranguren, CFI/ BACI Legislative Director, and Silvia Barden, CFI President and Legislative Committee member. Both presenters were intimately involved in the legislative process and negotiation of the bill and were happy to share their knowledge and experiences with colleagues.

The seminars were attended by hundreds of interpreters and were well-received as they provided interpreters the opportunity to hear a detailed presentation on exactly what is in the law. A Judicial Council representative participated on the panel for all but one seminar, and interpreters were able to hear from, and pose questions to CFI/BACI and the Judicial Council representative.

CFI/BACI were pleased to see so many colleagues coming out to become better informed. Many were pleasantly surprised to hear what is actually in the law and to be able to separate fact from rumor. The response from the interpreter community has been overwhelmingly positive. And the most frequently asked question after the seminar is "How can I help?"
