"The Laws of Interpreting" by Brandon Scovill and Fanny Suarez (1.5 hrs)
A report on the laws affecting court interpreters in the state of California, from the California Constitution to Appeals Court decisions and Rules of Court. Special emphasis will be placed on the most recent changes in legislation, rules, and case law with a background of the changes. Interpreters will receive resources to study and use.
"The Interest-based Approach to Mediation" by Jackie Ryle (1.5 hrs)
An interactive workshop on the
principles of the Interest-Based Approach to mediation, which
may be used in legal settings. Participants will gain an understanding
of the process, which entails the definition of the issue or issues in a
conflictive situation; the presence of underlying interests and the
importance of sharing those interests; the creation of options which
might meet those interests; selection of appropriate option(s); and
reaching consensus for mutually agreeable, win-win solutions.
Participants will have the opportunity to examine the process in the
context of a real world case study example, including the variables
of what it means to be an effective communicator in a mediation
process; power as a factor in mediation; the presence and impact of
values and perception; and defining what constitutes success in
mediation.
See Jackie's website for info about her impressive credentials.
